Wu Lien-Teh’s epidemic preventive system for plague control

Qingmeng Zhang, Fengmin Zhang, Baofeng Yang

Frontiers of Medicine 2018, Volume 12, Issue 1,   Pages 113-115 doi: 10.1007/s11684-018-0613-4

Abstract:

Pneumonic plague that originated in Russian Siberia broke out in Northeast China in October 1910–March 1911. On the basis of field visits, autopsy, bacteriological identification, and close collaboration with local authorities and international colleagues, Dr. Wu Lien-Teh implemented a series of efficient antiplague measures, which successfully controlled the development of an extraordinary epidemic plague. In his subsequent work, Dr. Wu demonstrated the respiratory transmission of pneumonic plague and tarbagans’ role in this spread. Dr. Wu’s academic and cultural contributions are valuable in the medical progress in China.

The Current Situation and Development of Health Management in China

Li Jiang,Tao Sha,Li Ming,Fu Hua,Wang Ke’an,Tian Chuansheng and Wang Longde

Strategic Study of CAE 2017, Volume 19, Issue 2,   Pages 8-15 doi: 10.15302/J-SSCAE-2017.02.002

Abstract:

Based on literature research, we selected a total of 17 typical organizations from Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai to investigate, including community health service centers, enterprises, health insurance companies, and health management service companies. The results of this study indicate that China has some problems in current health management, for example, community health service centers lack sufficient capacity in terms of personnel allocation and service content to carry out health management services; foreign-funded enterprises and large state-owned enterprises have carried out health management services with good results, but small- and medium-sized enterprises in China lack the independent ability to carry out health management services for their staff; health insurance companies are reluctant to carry out health insurance services because of the deficiency in profit models, while health management is often provided for high-end customers as an additional option; and health management service companies do not provide real health management services, but only physical examinations. Based on these problems in this study, we put forward a total of eight related policy recommendations and some countermeasures.

Bone metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma: facts and hopes from clinical and translational perspectives

Frontiers of Medicine 2022, Volume 16, Issue 4,   Pages 551-573 doi: 10.1007/s11684-022-0928-z

Abstract: Patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and bone metastasis (BM) suffer from greatly reduced life quality and a dismal prognosis. However, BM in HCC has long been overlooked possibly due to its relatively low prevalence in previous decades. To date, no consensus or guidelines have been reached or formulated for the prevention and management of HCC BM. Our narrative review manifests the increasing incidence of HCC BM to sound the alarm for additional attention. The risk factors, diagnosis, prognosis, and therapeutic approaches of HCC BM are detailed to provide a panoramic view of this disease to clinicians and specialists. We further delineate an informative cancer bone metastatic cascade based on evidence from recent studies and point out the main factors responsible for the tumor-associated disruption of bone homeostasis and the formation of skeletal cancer lesions. We also present the advances in the pathological and molecular mechanisms of HCC BM to shed light on translational opportunities. Dilemmas and challenges in the treatment and investigation of HCC BM are outlined and discussed to encourage further endeavors in the exploration of underlying pathogenic and molecular mechanisms, as well as the development of novel effective therapies for HCC patients with BM.
